The GTM engineer role — a hybrid of technical automation and revenue strategy built around AI-powered go-to-market systems — more than doubled in LinkedIn postings between mid-2025 and January 2026, but some analysts argue the role will be short-lived as AI agents absorb the work it was created to do.

Few job titles have moved from obscure to ubiquitous as quickly as GTM engineer. In mid-2025, the role existed in roughly 1,400 LinkedIn postings. By January 2026, that figure had passed 3,000. Companies including Cursor, Webflow and Notion were actively hiring for it. Clay — which hit $100 million ARR in December 2025 and reached a $5 billion valuation by early 2026 — is credited with pioneering the category, with its data enrichment and automation workflows becoming the reference use case for what a GTM engineer actually builds.

The role is a specific response to a specific problem. B2B sales and marketing workflows contain enough repetition, data handling and system integration that AI can automate large portions of them — but making that work requires someone who can build the automation, connect the data sources, maintain the workflows, and understand enough about revenue strategy to direct the output sensibly. GTM engineers are that person: technical enough to build AI-powered systems, commercially minded enough to align them to pipeline outcomes.

What GTM engineers actually do

The role sits at the intersection of marketing operations, sales engineering and AI implementation. A GTM engineer might build an AI-driven outreach system that personalises email sequences at scale, integrate a lead-scoring model with a CRM, create automated account research workflows that feed sales teams before every call, or connect product usage data to triggered marketing sequences. The common thread is using AI and automation to remove execution friction from the revenue process.

The rapid growth in postings reflects a genuine gap. Forty-three per cent of companies hiring GTM engineers, according to Digital Uncovered’s analysis of LinkedIn data, already use visitor identification tools such as ZoomInfo, 6sense or Apollo — suggesting the role is most common in organisations that have invested in a data-rich go-to-market stack and need technical capability to orchestrate it with AI.

CrowdStrike’s hire of a VP of Marketing Excellence and Transformation in 2025 — a senior role reporting to the CMO anchored on AI adoption across the marketing function — represents a parallel move at the leadership level: recognising that AI integration requires dedicated ownership, not just IT support.

The counterargument: the role builds what will replace it

The question being asked in some quarters is whether GTM engineering is a durable career category or a transitional one. Analysts at DOJO AI, writing in January 2026, argued that the GTM engineer’s primary output — AI-orchestrated systems for sales and marketing execution — is exactly what the next generation of agentic AI platforms is designed to deliver without requiring bespoke engineering. The role builds the systems; the systems, once mature, reduce the need for the role that built them.

The timeline matters. Agentic AI platforms capable of designing and maintaining complex go-to-market workflows autonomously are still in early development. The organisations hiring GTM engineers now are not waiting for that future — they are capturing the competitive advantage available in the present.

Where this leaves marketing and sales teams

For B2B marketing managers, the GTM engineering trend is worth understanding regardless of whether a direct hire is on the agenda. The capabilities that GTM engineers build — AI-powered enrichment, automated personalisation, intelligent routing, real-time data integration — are increasingly becoming baseline expectations in well-run revenue operations functions.

The practical question for most teams is not whether to hire a GTM engineer but how to develop equivalent capability: training existing marketing operations and demand generation talent on the automation tools — Clay, n8n, Make, and their successors — that GTM engineers use, and ensuring the data infrastructure exists that makes any of this work reliably.

The doubling of GTM engineer postings in six months tells a clear story about where B2B companies think the execution advantage lies. Whether the role survives in its current form into 2028 is probably the wrong question to be asking in mid-2026.
